The international financial services company, which operating in 23 countries and well-known for investors as a leader in rating information for various decisions was looking for new ideas for emerging markets.
What did the client want:
Complementary to the existing ratings the company wanted a new one, which would allow to measure and place in a number of aspects various company of different size from diverse countries against each other in comparable manner. In particular the task demanded to create a tool to measure and to compare the strategic management level and to rate a level in a particular company in comparable manner.
In order to cover the variety of the possible approaches to the strategic management in any company the current strategic theories were analysed and distilled. The information regarding practical application of different methodologies for strategic management in different countries and industries was collected and analysed as well. Based on the analysis the breakdown, “clusterisation”, and grouping of the strategic management attributes were conducted. For each attribute the assessment criteria and weight parameters were specified. Then the tools for collecting information for the analysis, as well as the information verifying and processing, analysis methods and procedures, and integrated rating calculation were designed, developed and deployed.
The project challenges:
Besides a variety of different strategic management schools, each country has its own customary practices and nuances. In addition, on the emerging markets a company can have non-formal strategic management and a barely documented procedures that work very well (not so rare cases). Thus it was extremely hard to create all-in-one tools for collecting information and further analysis. Especially complicated was to choose the consensus criteria for rating companies from various countries (for example, from India, Brazil and Russia), which should be coherent.
The developed tools were tested in three “pilot” projects in BRIC countries: the level of a strategic management was assessed in telecom, finance and manufacture companies. The methodology proved itself accurate and reliable. The tools were integrated in the new rating and globally deployed in order to support international investors with their decisions by providing the comparable rating of strategic management.
